Best Things to see in Taiwan’s East Coast?

1. Starting from the Northeast at Fulong Beach

If like us you decide to go on a round trip around Taiwan, the east coast is what will impress you the most. The journey to the east starts pretty much at Fulong Beach to the North.

We visited the beach after spending 1 night in the beautiful Jiufen.

Fulong Beach is renowned for its golden sandy beach and crystal-clear waters. The beach offers excellent conditions for swimming, surfing, and kayaking, catering to water sports enthusiasts!

2. National Center for Traditional Arts

The National Center for Traditional Arts (NCTA) is a vibrant hub for preserving, promoting, and performing traditional Taiwanese arts and crafts.

We stopped there for a visit during our Road Trip around Taiwan. The National Center for Traditional Arts is located on the beautiful East Coast in Yilan County.

3. Nan-fang-ao Fishing Harbor

Not far from the National Center for Traditional Arts, you can visit Nan-fang-ao Fishing Harbor.

It is one of the island’s largest and most important fishing ports. This vibrant harbor is renowned for its rich marine culture, fresh seafood, and beautiful coastal views.

The area around Nanfang’ao offers stunning coastal scenery, with opportunities for hiking and exploring nearby beaches and cliffs.

4. Qingshui Cliff

Further south, we recommend stopping at Qingshui Cliff. The sheer cliff face dropping straight into the sea is a sight to behold, offering one of the most dramatic coastal views in Taiwan.

5. Taroko Gorge

For us, Taroko Gorge was the highlight of our road trip around Taiwan and as such one of the best things to see on Taiwan’s East Coast!

Located in Hualien, Taroko Gorge is a stunning marble canyon that offers spectacular views, hiking trails, and the famous Tunnel of Nine Turns. It’s a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers!

6. Qixingtan Beach

Qixingtan Beach, near Taroko Gorge on Taiwan’s east coast, is one of the most serene and beautiful pebble beaches in Taiwan.

Unlike the sandy shores commonly found around the island, Qixingtan Beach is characterized by its smooth, colorful pebbles and clear, blue waters.

7. Baqi Rest Stop

Baqi Rest Stop is located along the picturesque East Coast Highway (Highway 11) in Taiwan. It is a popular stopover not just a place to stretch your legs but it’s a scenic spot that offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding coastal area.

It’s an ideal spot for taking photos and soaking in the natural beauty of the area.

8. Fengbin Skywalk

Fengbin Skywalk is located on Taiwan’s East Coast, south from Taroko Gorge.

The skywalk is by the cliff, with transparent glass, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the dramatic eastern coastline of Taiwan. The area is gorgeous and you will have plenty of great photo opportunities!

9. Matai’an Wetland Ecological Park

Another great stop along the East Coast of Taiwan is Matai’an Wetland Ecological Park. Indeed, it is one of the most significant wetland ecosystems in the region.

This park is an integral part of the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area, known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecological features.

The wetland is a sanctuary for a wide array of species, including various types of birds, fish, amphibians, and plant life, some of which are rare or endemic to Taiwan.

10. Shitiping

Shitiping, located along the picturesque East Coast of Taiwan in Hualien County, is an exceptional natural attraction known for its unique coastal geology and biodiversity.

13. Sanxiantai Arch Bridge

Sanxiantai Arch Bridge is an iconic landmark located on Taiwan’s scenic East Coast, in the Taitung County.

Brown Boulevard, is one of the best things to see on Taiwan’s East Coast! It is not just a road but a symbol of the serene beauty and agricultural heritage of the region.

Known officially as Chishang’s “Mr. Brown Avenue” or “Brown Road,” this route has gained fame through commercials and media, showcasing its stunning landscapes

This place is located near Taitung.

15. Dulan Surf Town

Dulan has emerged as a vibrant surf town, attracting surfers and travelers from around the world with its laid-back vibe, beautiful beaches, and consistent surf.

This once-quiet fishing village has transformed into a hub of cultural and outdoor activities, making it a must-visit destination if you are exploring the East Coast of Taiwan.

16. Taitung

17. Green Island

Green Island is located just off the southeastern coast of Taiwan. To get there you’ll need to take a 50-minute ferry ride from Taitung.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to make it to Green Island during our Road Trip, though it remains on our to-do list and gives us a good excuse to come to Taiwan 😉 So here is a report from our friends who visited and recommended Green Island to us.

Green Island is a small volcanic island famous for its crystal-clear waters, rich marine life, and the rugged charm of its coastline.

The underwater world is apparently full of colorful fish, sea turtles, and a variety of coral species.

18. Xiaoyeliu

Xiaoyeliu Park is located just a short drive from Taitung.

It is a natural marvel that showcases the unique geological features and stunning coastal scenery of Taiwan’s eastern coastline.

Our visit to this park was one of the highlights of our trip to Taitung.

The park is renowned for its fascinating rock formations, sculpted by the relentless forces of wind and waves over millions of years.

The most notable formations include mushroom rocks, honeycomb weathering patterns, and the iconic “sea grooves” that look like giant, natural sculptures.

19. Ruisui Hot Springs

Ruisui is famous for its hot springs, known for their therapeutic properties. Relax in these natural hot waters amidst the backdrop of beautiful mountains and rejuvenate your senses.

20. Kenting National Park

If you go on a road trip on the East Coast of Taiwan, then make a last stop to Kenting National Park all the way to the South!

Kenting National Park is renowned for its diverse natural landscapes, including beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and lush mountains.

Established in 1984, it was Taiwan’s first national park and remains one of the island’s most popular destinations. We absolutely loved it down there!
