Best hikes in Fuerteventura

Calderón Hondo Fuerteventura

Let’s start with one of our favorite hikes in Fuerteventura. This one is a unique experience, as you will ascend to the top of a volcano: CALDERON HONDO. If you only have time for 1 hike in Fuerteventura, then this is the one.

Easy to access and very well marked, the hike is located in the north of the island, near the village of Lajares. The path forms a loop during which you can observe panoramas worthy of a trip to the moon! The two trails that form the loop allow access to the volcano by passing in front of Montaña Colorada.

Thus, two routes are possible:

The easy route: when the path splits in two, turn right from Montaña Colorada. This is the path that goes around the volcano from the south. The walk is easy with little elevation, to finally arrive at the stairs that lead to the crater. For the return, you have the choice between retracing your steps or attempting the descent by the other side, a little steeper;

The sporty route: instead of going right, take the other path that goes around the volcano on the left. And be prepared to climb with good hiking shoes!

Along the path, a magnificently contrasting landscape opens up to you: between the blue of the sea in the distance and the red of the land. Finally, the Calderón Hondo crater, which means “deep pot”, stands out with its more than 70 m depth and 100 m in diameter. Once you reach it, a breathtaking view of the island awaits you!

We recommend hiking the Calderón Hondo right before sunset for the most beautiful view! This is one of the best hikes in Fuerteventura, enjoy!
